If you’ve ever looked around your home and wondered… “Are the products we use every day actually supporting our health?” … you are not alone. I help people do what I call a Home Detox assessment. Because this is not a situation of “what you don’t know can’t hurt you”.
Most of us grew up believing that if something was sold in stores, it was automatically safe. We trusted the brightly colored bottles under the sink, the candles that made our homes smell “clean,” and the products advertised to make life easier. But over time, many families have started asking deeper questions. And our family was one of those families about two decades ago. And what we learned inspired me to help others also do their research. And still almost 20 years later, I am still doing exactly that.
Questions like:
- What are we breathing every day?
- What are we touching repeatedly?
- What residues are left behind on surfaces, clothing, and skin?
- Could our environment be quietly contributing to overwhelm, headaches, skin irritation, fatigue, or other stress on the body?

This is where the idea of a home detox begins.
And no—it does not have to mean perfection, fear, or throwing everything away overnight. A healthier home is built one step at a time, and even small changes can have significant impact! Let’s get started!
What Is a Home Detox?
A home detox simply means becoming more intentional about the products, chemicals, fragrances, electronic frequencies, and environmental stressors we bring into our living spaces.
It is also about making sure there is no mold, carbon monoxide, or other unsuspected toxins in the home. Another piece is being aware of what contaminants come in on our shoes (think public bathrooms, lawn fertilizers, and others “things” our shoes walk through on a daily basis). By simply removing shoes or having a Norwex entry mat at the door, the amount brought into the home can be reduced.
Home Environmental Detox is about:
- reducing unnecessary chemical exposure
- simplifying what we use
- supporting the body instead of constantly burdening it
- creating a calmer, cleaner environment for the people we love
For many families, this journey starts with awareness.
Not fear.
Not guilt.
Just awareness & willingness to make small changes, step by step.
Why Your Environment Matters More Than Most People Realize
Our homes affect us constantly. The air we breathe. The surfaces we touch. The products used on our counters, mirrors, floors, mattresses, dishes, laundry, and body. Also the presence of potential unsuspected toxins in the home such as molds, paints and varnishes, and carpet off-gassing can cause uneccessary added burden.
Even small exposures repeated daily can compound over time.
Many conventional household products contain:
- synthetic fragrances
- harsh cleaning agents
- unnecessary dyes
- preservatives
- aerosol chemicals
- ingredients most of us cannot pronounce
The goal is not to become obsessive. The goal is to become informed and intentional.
Start With the “Big Impact” Areas
One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to change everything at once.
Instead, focus first on the areas that affect your family the most often.
1. Cleaning Products
Many people are surprised to learn how many chemicals are involved in traditional cleaning routines. One of the simplest shifts is learning how to clean more effectively with fewer products. That is where Norwex came in for our family! It made this step easy and affordable!
Almost two decades ago, I became passionate about silver-embedded fiber-based cleaning systems that mechanically remove contaminants instead of relying so heavily on chemical-heavy sprays. Simple really can be powerful.
2. Laundry
Laundry products come into contact with your skin all day long.
Consider evaluating:
- detergents
- fabric softeners and beads
- dryer sheets
- fragrances
- stain removers
Choosing simpler, low-tox options can make a meaningful difference over time. Again, Norwex checked this box for our family with their EWG-verified laundry products!
3. Air Quality
Notably, many homes are filled with:
- artificial fragrance
- candles
- plug-in air fresheners
- room sprays
- poor ventilation
Sometimes, the “clean smell” is actually a mixture of chemicals floating through the air, being breathed into our lungs. Opening windows regularly, simplifying (or even eliminating) artificial fragrances, and improving airflow can help create a fresher environment naturally.
4. Kitchen & Food Storage
For many of my customers, the kitchen is another great place to begin.
For starters, some simple changes might include:
- reducing plastic food storage (we leaned into glass and high-quality silicone options)
- simplifying dishwashing products
- using reusable cleaning tools instead of disposable waste-heavy options
- filtering water (Willie set up a system with a filter specific to removing chlorine and chloramides, fluoride, and bacteria, along with other known contaminants like residual pharmaceuticals, heavy metals, etc. It includes a UV light, certain filtration, and reverse osmosis for our drinking water.)
Progress Over Perfection
This is SO important: You do NOT have to change everything overnight. Most families cannot—and honestly, should not—approach this journey from a place of pressure or fear. A healthier lifestyle is built through consistent small steps.
One safer swap.
One cleaner habit.
One intentional choice at a time.
Over time, those small choices begin to add up. And something I’ve learned, is that often these changes also end up saving you LOTS of money!
Why I’m Passionate About Home Detox
As a wellness educator, Norwex leader, wife, and mom, I became increasingly passionate about helping families create homes that support their well-being instead of quietly working against it.
What began as a simple interest in safer cleaning, eventually grew into a much bigger mission:
helping people simplify their homes, reduce unnecessary toxic burden, and create healthier rhythms for everyday life.
I truly believe our homes should support our health—not constantly stress the body.

Final Thoughts
You do not need a perfect home to create a healthier one.
Small intentional changes really do matter.
And often, the goal is not about doing more. It is about simplifying what no longer serves your health, your peace, or your family well-being. One step at a time.
